How to have Power over the Occult

October 15, 2009

I thought it would be appropriate to end this particular teaching with how we can begin to have power over the occult. A wise man once told me not to come to him with problems, but come only with solutions. I have labored hard over the last several days to illustrate the problem I believe we have in the contemporary church. Today I would like to spend some time speaking on the only force that can eradicate the force of Satan and the occult. For Christians this force is, no doubt, the Holy spirit. The Holy spirit is the other “comforter” that Jesus promised  us that would abide with us forever. (John 14:16) Jesus later went on to be our advocate in Heaven while the Holy spirit remained here on earth to “guide us into all truth.” I believe Satan has deliberatly confused the church body about the true function of the Holy spirit.  The Holy spirit is just as much God as Jesus and the Father . I think in theory we acknowledge this, but not in practice.  Most Christians don’t expect the Holy spirit to carry out the same ministry that Jesus did, but this is exactly what Jesus told his disciples would  happen; “Verily verily, I say unto you,  He that believeth on me the works that I do shall he do also and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” (John 14:12) This is why Jesus said that it was expedient that he goes away. He knew  the disciples would still need supernatural power after he ascended back into Heaven.  Jesus has left us another comforter (Holy spirit) to do the same things that he did during his earthly mission. This is why he wouldn’t allow the disciples to leave Jerusalem to evangelize the world until they received the baptism of the Holy spirit. “For John truly baptized you with water: but you shall be baptized with the holy ghost not many days hence.” (Acts 1:5) What is the purpose of this separate baptism? Verse 8  explains “But you shall receive power, after that the holy ghost is come upon you and you shall be my witnesses unto me.” There are two important points brought out by this verse, one Jesus says that you will receive power and two, that we will be his witnesses. So what type of power would we receive? The supernatural power to be a witness. This is one of the main purposes for this baptism. Many well meaning Christians confuse this experience with the salvation experience and yet the bible clearly differentiates the two. Some teach that the Holy ghost comes and seals us when we make Jesus Lord over our life. They usually use John 21:22 to justify this position. “And when he(Jesus) had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.” I would agree that they were sealed by the spirit but not FILLED yet for the purpose to be witnesses unto the world.  Receiving the Holy spirit in this context  (verse 22) is all about the resurrection and not the infilling of the spirit  that subsequently took place on the day of  Pentecost. They had this seal because they were the first to believe on Jesus. There could be no true belief  in Jesus until they believed that he rose from the dead. Once they believed in the resurrection their salvation was secured. Then Jesus breathed on them the same way he breathes on us when we accept salvation today. This isn’t however the supernatural endowment that Jesus promised the disciples that they would receive. Remember Jesus said that they would receive “power”.  Power here translated in the greek gives us the word “dunamis” and this is where we get the our word ” dynamite”. Strong’s Concordance suggest that this power is “miraculous power” and its known by its strength. Lets look at another scripture that uses power the same way. Luke 10:19 says that Jesus has given us “power” over all the “power” of the enemy. The first power here is not ” dunamis” or dynamite power it’s  “authority power” such as the power that a magistrate or judge has. Look close, the second power mentioned is dunamis power but its mentions the enemy having this power. So what does this mean? This means that Jesus has authorized us to have supernatural power over the enemy. Jesus himself never denied that the enemy had supernatural power. He never promised that the enemy would stop coming after us. He did however promise not to leave us “comfortless”. He knew that we would need supernatural power to attest to a supernatural event (resurrection). He has made this provision of power available to us if we would only obey scripture.

Jesus said for us to be baptized in the Holy spirit and we should comply. We can no longer treat this as an optional doctrine. We are losing legions of believers by the day! The occult  has allured them away because of the promise of power.  They don’t see any power left in the church. All they see are people with good intellectual concepts. We have no right to expect a sinner to believe a gospel that has not been supernaturally attested to . This what  Jesus  and the disciples did .

In summary, I would like to reiterate that the enemy is very persuasive and cunning. I am alarmed by the “Satanist” agenda as of 1988  against the church. I’m sure you can look this up online somewhere but the gist of it was this:  1. The antichrist would come soon. 2. That ministries and works of God would be destroyed. 3. That Christians would become complacent. 4. That Christians would seek churches that do not preach a full gospel. 5. That Christians cease their fasting and prayer. 6. That the gifts of the holy spirit would be ignored.  All of this would be accompanied by fasting and prayer on the Satanist part. This should stir up believers and non believers alike. Satan knows that the only power that can defeat him is the supernatural power of the Holy spirit. My next article will deal with how you can receive this supernatural provision.

The Bible and the Occult pt 2

October 14, 2009

When most of us think of witchcraft, we tend to think of goblins and goons and images of witches flying in the air on brooms.  However this is not  how the bible depicts witchcraft. Remember yesterday we discussed that “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft” (1 Samuel 15:23). Witchcraft takes on various forms in our contemporary culture, but the one universal quality in all forms is rebellion. Rebellion is usually born out of bitterness or deception. I believe Lucifer rebelled because of his bitterness. I believe he was bitter over the fact that God was going to create the human race and that he would have to be subservient to us. I believe this is why he labored so hard to corrupt the flesh of man. When bitterness goes unchecked it tends to breed rebellion. So, where does bitterness come from? After all no one becomes bitter without some kind of cause. I believe this cause is rejection. Rejection says its all about me and thus gives me the right to be bitter. There is another word  we could use that would be more fitting and its pride. Pride is the original sin but it was not committed by Adam and Eve, it was committed by Lucifer himself. Ezekiel 28: 17 says ” Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty”. You see, Lucifer thought more of himself than he should. Pride almost always leads to rejection. Pride creates a false self and when that false self goes unrecognized, bitterness begins to set in. Bitterness will surely lead to rebellion and rebellion leads to death.

There are several forms of  the occult or witchcraft that I will be teaching on in this series. I would be remiss however, if I didn’t mention the main use of the occult that opens up all the other doors. The main door I believe that opens up every other door of the occult  is “self-love”. I believe this because that  is the sin that Lucifer got himself caught up in. This explains how the devil has been sinning since the beginning (1st John:3 8). This sin was not committed on the earth however, it was committed in Heaven. Lucifer, who then became Satan,(the adversary) brought with him to earth the spirit of rebellion.  Again as I stated before this is the present condition of man. I can’t overstate this enough. Some people, including most Christians, practice rebellion (witchcraft) without even being aware of it. I believe this is the problem that the church of Galatia had. Paul asks in Galatians 3:1 “Who has bewitched you” as if they were under some demonic spell.  More on that later.

Rebellion always has its own agenda. Its agenda is more about being independent from God than it is about  perversion. I don’t believe that Lucifer committed a sin in the moral sense. His sin was wanting to run the universe on his own terms. In essence, people want supernatural power apart from God for self reliance. They want to depend on themselves and not on God.  They want supernatural power for control and the Bible calls this witchcraft.

Witchcraft is the oldest religion known to man and again it was first practiced in Heaven when Lucifer convinced a third of the angels to rebel with him (Revelation 12:7). The means that he used to convince these angels to rebel was deception. Deception is only the real tool the enemy has to assert his control over humanity. Deception is all about control, this is perfectly illustrated in the story of Adam and Eve. The enemy deceived Eve for the purpose of  asserting her authority. This is an important point to capitalize on. He didn’t use brute force to take their authority. He instead used his “perfect wisdom” to compel them to sin. In other words, the only power that he had over them was the power that they granted him to have.

Satan primarily works through the power of vision and images. He works in imaginations, pretensions, and illusions. He can make good appear evil and evil to appear good. He is a master lawyer and perfect in wisdom. Ezekiel 28: 16 also says that “He corrupted his perfect wisdom on the account of his brightness.” Never forget that Satan is the master of deception because his wisdom is perfect and he is still an angel. God created him to be “perfect in wisdom” but Satan chose to use  his own free will to pervert the wisdom God had blessed him with. That being said, he is very clever in controlling the material world by deception but he can’t compel someone by “physical force” to submit to him because God didn’t create him to be that type of angel. The arch angel Michael on the other hand is known for his physical strength and is deemed the “warrior angel” and he moves things by force (see Revelation 12:7-8) . The only force Satan has is the force of illusion. He tricks people into believing wrong things. This is why it’s hard for many people to get saved and why it’s just as difficult for most Christians to stay saved. They are being controlled  by a spiritual force that they are totally unaware of. There is an invisible, indefinable force perverting supernatural power in the heavenly realms masquerading itself around as the most high.  The one for sure thing we can do to start getting the advantage over the enemy is not to participate in the “unpardonable sin”  that separated him from God in the first place. I believe self-love (pride) must be dealt with before you can address other areas of sin. Pride always precedes sin because it seeks its own way and not God’s way. We have all been guilty of this, but the fact is you don’t want it to become a lifestyle. I pray that we would begin to identify the “I” centered things in our life and begin to root them out of  it. We will explore more in the next article on how to identify and conquer pride.

” But if our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost, In whom the god of this World hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of  Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them”(2 Corinthians 4:3-4). The Bible calls Satan the god of this world and most Christians seem to be woefully ignorant to this fact. We also seem to be ignorant to the spiritual world  that surrounds us and its demonic influence.  Our  world was not always in this present state of  chaos. There was a time when the spirit of man ruled and all evil principalities were placed beneath him. One day however the spirit forfeited his right as a ruler on the earth and by disobedience gave authority to those same principalities that were once under him. This is the present state of man and why Satan is called the “god of this age”. Ephesians also calls Satan the “ruler of the air”. The word air in the greek means “atmosphere”. This means that satan is in control of the atmosphere around us. Paul mentions later in Ephesians 6 that our “War isn’t against flesh and blood but against the rulers of this dark world and the spiritual wickedness in heavenly places.”  Paul was very aware of these spiritual entities that lurked behind the material universe. We however are at a disadvantage  because of our lack of spiritual knowledge.  We only think in terms of  what is right in front  of us. The bible uses another word, carnality. To be carnally minded means to be ruled by your senses totally. Satan loves when you are ruled by your senses in this physical world because he knows that he can exalt his throne above our carnal thinking. We can never get one up on him because we keep looking for the problem in the natural world. Paul didn’t see it this way. He knew that our enemies were not natural or transparent. This is why he encouraged us to put on the full armor of God. This is also why Peter said to be “vigilant because our adversary walks around like a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour”(1 Peter 5:8). It is apparent that he doesn’t parade himself right in front of us. He knows that he would be easily detected here. Instead he hides himself  at the apex of the universe  transformed into an angel of light. This is his command post. He has  all the occult knowledge  of the universe here and  perverts this present world with it. Satan brought with him from heaven the knowledge of the occult. Occult means “hidden knowledge” and this is the “light” that he(Satan) blinds unbelievers with. We are trying to discern a realm that he has had  dominion over for eons. You may say I don’t know anything about the occult and would never practice it. This paradoxically defines the problem. We are ignorant to the devil’s schemes and we practice the occult everyday and don’t even realize it. The main manifestation of the occult is rebellion. 1st Samuel 15:23 says “Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft.” Rebellion says I DON’T NEED GOD. Rebellion seeks to find its own way. Spiritual rebellion is more subtle than the rebellion we usually think about. It says that I’m going to make my own way with out God. If you remember this what exactly happened to Eve in the garden of Eden. The devil tricked her into thinking that she wouldn’t die and that she would be like God if she ate the fruit. (Genesis 3: 4-5).  Eve wasn’t evil and was probably closer to God than most of us and yet she was still vulnerable to the deception of the enemy. He promised her supernatural power, however, what Eve didn’t realize was that she already had supernatural power. This is the same issue the church struggles with today. We want super natural power but we don’t want to go to God to get it. We don’t need God so we use alternative methods to tap into to the supernatural. Now there is nothing wrong with supernatural power. In fact I believe there is not enough teaching in the body of Christ on the supernatural power of God and this has given Satan the advantage over us. Our traditional churches has left us starving for more supernatural teaching. Because this hunger hasn’t been satisfied, we tend to look for satisfaction in the occult. Another main tool of the occult is “divination”. You could put  fortune telling, ESP, and astrology under the umbrella of divination. Divination provides  knowledge through supernatural  means about people , events, and situations. This power is usually accessed for the purpose of control or self reliance. Lets take a look at astrology. Some  claim that it’s just a harmless pseudo science . I don’t believe so. I believe it’s  real and very harmful. Remember Satan is called the ruler of the air and the cosmos is his headquarters. He knows all about  the zodiac and the precession of the equinoxes which were ironically some of the first pagan religions. There are spiritual truths in the invisible realm that the enemy uses to exploit the natural world. We can no longer, as a church body, afford to remain  ignorant to this invisible world if we expect to make any real progress in the natural world.

The Righteousness of Faith-Original sin pt1

October 6, 2009

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and DEATH by sin; and so DEATH passed upon all men, for that ALL HAVE  SINNED.” (Romans 5:12)  A lot of Christians believe that they are still sinners even after they invite Jesus into their heart and make him Lord over thier life. They usually use Romans 3:23 to justify themselves as sinners, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” but is this the meaning of the text? I believe Paul clarifies his statement in chapter 5 verse 12 by saying “death passed upon ALL MEN, for that ALL HAVE SINNED.” How did death pass upon all men? Through the original act of disobedience on Earth. Remember in the garden of Eden when the Lord told Adam that if  he ate from the” tree of knowledge of good and evil” that in that day he would surely die. While Adam did not  die physically that day, he certainly did die spiritually and thus this is how sin was brought on ALL. This is why we are all sinners. We inherited the sin nature from our father Adam.We didn’t have to commit a sin to become a sinner. We were born with the sin curse in our D.N.A.   However to call your self a “mere sinner”  after receiving salvation contradicts what the word of God says about the new believer; ” Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) . Behold signifies something worthy to observe with the eyes. The new creature that you are in Christ is something to “behold” and yet so many Christians view this as just a theological concept. You are a new creation my friend. One translation actually says a “new species that has never existed before.” Once you are made “new “you are  now the righteous of God or in right standingwith God.  A little further down in verse 21 of the same chapter Paul says “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that they we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”  We often hear of God’s grace as being “unmerited favor” and I would agree, but what is the unmerited favor? The unmerited favor is Jesus of course and he is our grace. Look at verse 24 in the third Chapter of Romans “Being justified FREELY by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.” Again we were all born with the “sin curse” and I’m sure that many people view this as unfair. After all, we didn’t do anything to earn the sin curse. We didn’t personally sin, Adam did. While we may have had nothing to do with the first Adam bringing a curse on us, we can make a decision today about the “last Adam” Jesus. Jesus is humanity’s second chance to get it right. Actually 1 Corinthians 15:45 calls Him (Jesus)  the” last Adam”. Sin did enter through the first Adam but grace entered through the last Adam. “So where sin did abound, grace(Jesus) did more abound.”  To indentify your self as a mere “sinner doesn’t allow God’s grace to abound in your life. Never forget that you are a “New Creation” living  by grace (Jesus). This type of mind set will allow you to cultivate a relationship with God without having a sin conscience. Many of  us attempt to earn our right standing with God by our works and the Bible calls our works of righteousness outside of grace (Jesus) “filthy rags.” You can never be good enough to come to the Father, you are a sinner, and because you are sinner you need Jesus to justify you before Father God. Justify means “just-as-if” you had never done anything. One preacher said that God tears up his i.o.u’s when we accept Jesus, the last Adam. You are the righteousness of God because Jesus justified you. We must align our thinking with the Word of God and what Jesus has to say about us and accept nothing less for our life. We all still need grace (Jesus) every day. However, this doesn’t  mean that we are still sinners. Jesus died so that we could live by a “GRACE CONSCIENCE” and not a “SIN CONSCIENCE”.

What is the Prosperity Gospel?

October 4, 2009

The so called “prosperity message” has been the center of much controversy in the  secular community as well as in the Body of Christ. Once again I am dismayed that we can’t come and reason together as Paul once suggested, and find some common ground when it comes to “Biblical Prosperity”. I will be honest with you, I have exhausted the argument on both sides and found errors with both. It sort of speaks to a bigger problem in the Body of Christ when we don’t  allow the word of God to be our final  authority. I believe it’s healthy in any discussion to have a deliberate use of certain words. For instance, some critics of the Bible  try to appeal to the etymology of a word in English to gain understanding from a word that has its origin in Hebrew or Greek. Now I will admit that I am neither  a Greek or Hebrew scholar, but I do use a concordance diligently. I say  this because we must understand how the word “Prosperity” is defined from a Biblical perspective. The Hebrew word for “Prosperity” is “Shalom” which means peace . However not just any kind of “peace”, such as the absence of war, but  this kind of “peace “yields blessing to every aspect of a person’s life. To have this kind of “peace” means that you are walking in the  fullness of God’s blessing. It means your finances are well. It means you are in good health. It means that you have a sound mind. This is what true Biblical Prosperity is all about. I’m not sure when it got reduced to a fixation on increasing only. I know some people who are  blessed materially and they don’t let the increase change them. However we all know people who are miserable even with material increase and I would hardly call that prosperity. If you can’t be content with increase then that’s greed and not prosperity. With all that being said, is it wrong for a Christian to prosper and to materially increase? Certainly not! It is not the increase that’s the issue, it’s the attitude toward the increase. Lets look at some scripture. 1 Timothy 6:17 says “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.”  This verse illustrates the right attitude to maintain in regards to increase. It’s essential that you don’t put security in “uncertain riches” but put faith in the living God who is the manufacturer of riches. Most Christians don’t see poverty as a curse. They will view increase as a blessing, but never entertain the notion that decrease may be a curse. This is especially true for people who have more than enough to take care of themselves and yet they constantly always come up short. They have the wrong attitude about money. On the other hand, some people make an idol out of their poverty just as much as some make an idol out of their riches. Now, let me say that I am not one of these “Prosperity Hustlers” that’s going to promise that you will have your own private jet and everything, but a Christian is supposed to increase for the sole purpose of being a blessing to someone else. Yes it’s better to give than to receive but you can’t give what you don’t have. Solomon said  “Money is the answer for all things.”  (Ecclesiastes 10:19) Some Christians accept poverty as God’s will for their life. This type of thinking does not line up with scripture.  The blessing is all about reproducing (Deuteronomy 28:8). Now again God doesn’t bless us so that we can increase personally, but so that we can be a blessing to someone else. In closing, I would say be grateful for what you have but don’t be content with it.Remember the blessing is having all that you need to do the will of God and a little extra to share with others. Always strive to reproduce for the kingdom.
